August 25, 2011: No new EHV-1 cases.

August 24, 2011: Two additional EHV-1 cases confirmed
Two (2) additional horses on the affected premises have been confirmed positive by nasal swab for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. The only clinical sign displayed by these two horses was a fever. The affected premises is under quarantine and the thirteen (13) other horses currently on the property are being monitored. Current epidemiologic investigation findings indicate minimal risk of disease spread from this closed premises.

August 23, 2011: Confirmed case of EHV-1 neurotropathogenic strain
On August 23, 2011, a 15 year old Oldenburg mare from Sonoma County has confirmed positive for the neuropathogenic strain of Equine Herpes Virus-1. The mare is isolated, quarantined and undergoing treatment at a veterinary referral hospital. The premises of origin is under veterinary observation and the potentially exposed horses temperatures are being monitored twice daily. Epidemiologic investigation conducted by CDFA reveals minimal disease risk based on lack of animal movement on and off the affected premises. The investigation has determined the positive horse has no direct link to the May 2011 outbreak of EHV-1 in cutting horses which resulted in 22 positive confirmed equine cases in California. CDFA staff will continue to monitor the situation to ensure disease control.

May 2011 Outbreak
The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Western National Championship held in Ogden, Utah April 30-May 8, 2011 had 400 competitors. On May 13, 2011, California Animal Health Officials were notified by the NCHA that fifty-four (54) California horses that competed in the event may have been exposed to the neuropathogenic strain of the EHV-1 virus. Some of these same horses were entered in the Kern County Cutting Horse event in Bakersfield, CA on May 13, 2011. One horse, that competed in Ogden, UT, was euthanized at the Kern County Cutting Horse event after showing severe neurological signs; EHM was the final diagnosis for this horse. All horses at the Ogden, UT and Bakersfield, CA events were potentially exposed to the disease. A total of 22 California horses were confirmed positive for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. On June 20, 2011, California declared containment of the EHV-1 Outbreak.

Thanks to BITS she can now ride charger anywhere.

So, my thought is I like most do not have a lot of extra money but because I believe in what this organization is doing, I am going to donate 15 dollars and I hope you can give them a little of your hard earned money. I think BITS is doing the right thing by helping people with horses by keeping the cost down on gelding stallions, holding vaccination clinics and low cost euthanasia clinics.

We have helped over 100 horse owners however in the past two years donations and clinic fees have not covered the costs.

These horses are a prime example of why we want to bring awareness to over breeding and offer the low cost gelding clinics.

The mothers and foals were 2 out of 4 that were on the way to slaughter. A feedlot is no place for a foal, ever, so we offered to rehab them until homes could be found. Shipwrecked Farms will be taking one of the pairs .

I don't know who bred these horses but their hooves don't look like they have ever been touched. Their tails are a solid mass of matted hair which gives them a good thump just from trying to swat a fly. The feedlot said the larger mare leads but she will not let anyone touch her yet. She has a large scar that appears to have been left on its own to heal. The younger mother is only a 3 year old filly herself, meaning she was bred at 2 years old. Her filly was a week old when it was sold for slaughter. A feedlot is a rough place for a big horse and this filly shows she has been pretty beat up. She has missing patches of hair and scrapes all over her face , body and all four legs are bald from the hoof to the pastern. Her mother was so stressed at the feedlot that she was refusing to nurse her. The cruelty to an innocent animal and her newborn is beyond fathom. Posted by BITS TEAM.

The part we don't have time or volunteers for is fund-raising, not to mention everyone dreads sending these emails but we have no choice this time..

We hope you have appreciated the clinics and would like to utilize them in the future, understand the need or let other horses and owners benefit from the services.
Every dollar donated is spent directly to put on clinics and cover the costs of outside facility fees, vet fees and insurance. Although we are not focusing on rescue , we do take in and rehab horses that just could not be left where they were. We also provide hay help for owners in temporary crisis and educational pamphlets to Animal Control agencies. As you can imagine it is expensive to keep going.

The truth is we can't keep going without your help.

We have to raise $720 immediately to cover the costs of the horses in foster and rehab, including two mares with young foals headed to slaughter that were saved by a group with no plan on where to send them, two horses from a rescue that could no longer afford proper care and a pony that is still undergoing treatment for burns
We also need funding to get the next clinics started , to pay facilities, insurance and upfront costs.
Please consider donating and truthfully any amount will help reach the goal and keep BITS going, no amount is too small.
